frankly i think the mark of a good pet owner lies not only in husbandry choices and the knowledge of the animals in question, but also in one’s willingness to part with the animal if that’s what’s best, especially if the alternative is a life of neglect or poorer care for whatever reason.
there’s such an intensely negative stigma surrounding rehoming companion animals and it makes lots of people nervous about picking that option, even if it’s the better alternative. obviously rehoming isn’t ideal, and an animal is a commitment you should stick to, but point of the matter is we’re only human and sometimes very big and unexpected things can crop up. not only is it incredibly responsible but it’s also incredibly selfless of a person to put the welfare and quality of life of the animal above their own emotions and sentiments.
