I just got back from a week long mission trip, and my male betta got sick while I was gone 🙁

I think he might be getting Popeye, but he’s also not swimming much and he’s laying on his side a lot. Does anyone have advice for Epsom salt dips???

His eyes are definitely swelling. I just did a 13 minute dip, he just laid on his side the whole time, but he’s sitting at the top of his tank now instead of the bottom. I don’t know what the cause of it is so I’m not sure how to treat; if I should use antibiotics now or see if it clears up with baths. I don’t know if I can use them together?

Don’t use them together. They’re both string treatments, and both would honestly be too much stress

I’m sure you already tested the water. What were the parameters? That sounds like it could be ammonia poisoning. Well, except the popeye, but ammonia will contribute to that.

Gotcha, thanks

Everythings at zero. I was gone for a week and my mom was taking care of him so it may have spiked in that time but I doubt it? He’s the only fish in there and she only fed him a couple times, and it’s a twenty gal. She said the temp dropped a degree or two but she plugged his heater in to fix it, so it’s back at 75 where it usually is.

You. Can’t see them at all here, but Max has two more little brown things in her muscles. You can see the big one, and the other two are much smaller and look like commas. They are above the original spot.

She seems ok otherwise. The only thing that concerns me is she’s very light colored. Her colors have barely gotten darker since I’ve had her. The only thing wrong is the pH is too high (7.2) and she could maybe use more cover, which I’m working on. She’s extremely active though, she doesn’t seem stressed or in pain. :/

I can’t really tell much from this, but if it helps Jackson had hemorrhagic septicemia and it looked like this. He got really lethargic before the spots showed up but that was the only change in behavior. It started as one spot and gradually grew into more.

One of my shrimp has got this weird brown color? It’s the same color as the algae I have, so maybe it’s from her eating that? I’m worried about an infection

The seller I got my shrimp from contacted me back. They think the copper from the food I was feeding my fry could have been enough to affect them.

Two shrimp are left in the tank and seem ok, and I have six remaining in the bucket that seem ok. Hopefully it was the food and they can recover from it.

Ok! I think I’ve finally figured it out. I’m pretty sure they’re dying because of molt failure. That was the first thing I looked for, but most of my shrimp are transparent at the area of the body where their molt splits, so I didn’t see that they were trying to molt. In acclimating them back to the tank I triggered them to molt – two of them are fine, three others’ condition is currently pending. I’ve ordered a shrimp mineral supplement, and for until it gets here I’ve added eggshells.

I’m really upset that I didn’t notice sooner and lost well over half my shrimp, but at least I’ve got it figured out now.

I’m acclimating my shrimp back to the tank, but it triggered them to start molting. One molted really fast and is doing great, two are getting there but their exoskeleton is stuck a couple places, and two aren’t doing too great with it. Is there anything I can do to help them?? I assume it’s too late for any supplements to help. Do you think I could gently rub them with something? One of them is looking p bad, his exoskeleton is stuck on the sides of his upper body.

I think this may have been the original cause of the deaths

Hnnnngng I’m still losing shrimp

The fish have all been separated from them, but they’re still dying so I don’t know what’s wrong. Before they die they start swimming around with no sense of control, then they just. Slowly stop moving. I don’t know what to dooo!!!

One mental breakdown and several rapidly declining shrimp later, I’m fixing a bucket of rodi water that I’ll acclimate the shrimp into, separating the healthy from sick. We’re going to contact the seller and see if they know what’s up

There’s more shrimp left than I thought – those pictured and a couple more in the tank. Most of them look ok, but some are swimming on their backs or doing flips. I’m not sure what I should do with them? Leave them in the tank, put them in new water, separate the ones that don’t look too good, or what.

So I got them all acclimated into rodi last night. The two that weren’t looking good died, but all the others look ok for the time being

Aaauuhhhhhh two of my shrimp died 🙁

I’m testing the water – everything is zero – temp is 75ish. I don’t think the betta hurt them? He hasn’t been very interested and they quickly swim away from him if he gets near. I doubt old age since a found two at the same time? The only thing I’ve changed recently is adding a heater, but I monitored the temp and it didn’t go up much/at all, and that’s been nearly a week ago. Any ideas???? This is my first time keeping neocaridinas.
